OCF Volunteer Programs Coordinator
OCF is unique among foundations in its use of volunteers as advisors. We engage volunteer time, talent and knowledge in our administration, development, grantmaking and outreach.
Key among OCF’s 1,600 volunteers are the members of the eight regional Leadership Councils. Leadership Council members inform OCF about community needs, effective projects addressing those needs and opportunities to develop philanthropy. Shawna Sykes of Scappoose, a member of the North Coast Leadership Council, recently shared her reflections on OCF and her involvement: “I want to see good things happen in Oregon and in my community because I’m here for the long haul. When individuals, businesses, service clubs and nonprofit organizations work together to improve life in Oregon, changes happen so much more quickly.” Shawna and other council members help connect communities in their region as well as statewide.
Leadership Councils meet within their regions twice per year, led by a chair who is also usually a volunteer member of OCF’s board of directors. During this fall’s meetings, councils had an agenda packed with information about OCF’s local and statewide efforts including updates on the following:
- Governor Kitzhaber’s Oregon Education Investment Board;
- OCF’s investment performance and value of the endowment;
- Regional activities, including outreach to donors and potentials donors, training and opportunities for nonprofits, and community convenings;
- OCF’s Community Grant Program applications; and
- Regional Action Initiative efforts around the state.
Each council had a great conversation about how they can most effectively support OCF’s mission to improve life in Oregon and promote effective philanthropy. They are truly passionate people, united by their investment in Oregon’s future and their belief in the power of philanthropy.
