The Oregon Community Foundation Presents: The 2017 Grantseekers Haiku Contest

The Grantseekers Haiku Contest challenges qualifying organizations to collapse a traditional grant proposal into the seventeen-syllable format of a haiku poem. OCF will award a total of $10,000 ($5,000, $3,000 and $2,000) to the three most compelling requests posted to our Facebook page between Tuesday, July 18 at 8 a.m. to Thursday, July 20 at 11:59 p.m. Entries must abide by the haiku format, and will ideally respond to the following prompts:

Title of poem = The name of your organization.
1st Line (5 syllables): Tell us about your organization.
2nd Line (7 syllables): What need does your project address?
3rd Line (5 syllables): What do you propose to do about it?

Example:
NORTH COAST FRIENDS OF THE VETERANS
We serve homeless vets
No one can find our building
We need a new sign

All entries must be posted to The Oregon Community Foundation’s Facebook page to be considered. The contest period will run from Tuesday, July 18 at 8 a.m. to Thursday, July 20 at 11:59 p.m. Please see the full guidelines below, and we look forward to reading your proposals!

The Grantseekers Haiku Contest Guidelines

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Only one entry per organization.
  • To receive a grant, contest winners must have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and be classified as a public entity rather than a private foundation as defined by section 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code.
  • Organizations without 501(c)(3) status may not apply, but public, non-taxable entities, such as schools, are also eligible.
  • Individuals may not apply.
  • Fiscal sponsors will not be permitted for the purposes of this contest.

FORMAT:
Entries must adhere to the haiku format of seventeen syllables and be submitted in one of the following formats:

  1. text accompanied by an image; or
  2. text embedded within an image.
  3. No videos will be accepted.

CONTEST PERIOD:
The contest begins Tuesday, July 18 at 8:00 a.m. and ends Thursday, July 20 at 11:59 p.m. All entries received outside of the contest period will be ineligible.

WINNER SELECTION:
The top three haiku will be selected by a panel of OCF volunteers. All decisions made by the panel are final. We encourage organizations to “like,” share and comment on contest entries, though such interactions will not be the evaluative criteria for contest judges. Entries will be evaluated based upon the quality of the request, adherence to the haiku format, imagery and clarity. Winners will be announced on OCF’s Facebook page on or around August 7. Contest winners will be contacted by OCF staff to verify eligibility and tax-exempt status.

PUBLICITY:
By participating, each entrant grants OCF permission to use their organization’s name, text, and imagery for publicity purposes without payment or guarantee of award.

AWARDS:
A total of $10,000 will be awarded through individual grants of $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000 each.

QUESTIONS AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE:
We are unable to provide technical support or individual assistance for this contest. Inquiries to OCF will be answered with a copy of these guidelines.

ADDITIONAL LIMITATIONS:

  • The Oregon Community Foundation reserves the right to terminate the contest or adjust contest guidelines at any time.
  • We are unable to provide confirmation your entry has been received.
  • All entries must conform to the haiku format of seventeen total syllables. Good luck!
