Darlene Hooley Establishes Scholarship Fund to Aid Oregon Veterans

During her 12 years as Oregon’s congressional representative, Darlene Hooley heard many stories of need, heroism, and commendable community service.  But none touched her as much as the plight of returning National Guard veterans, who, despite their service overseas, often are not qualified to receive full G.I. benefits, which require 36 months of active federal duty.

“Education is the key to helping soldiers reintegrate into their communities and obtain stable employment. These men and women have sacrificed for our country and deserve our support,” says Hooley.

Oregon has had more than 7,000 Oregon National Guard soldiers deployed since 9/11, and the Oregon Military Department estimates that about one-third of these veterans are returning home unemployed or underemployed.

To help these veterans, Hooley made a personal contribution to establish the Darlene Hooley Scholarship for Oregon Veterans at OCF.  Her goal is to continue to build the fund through other individual contributions.
