Reading mobs popping up around the county in front of local libraries and in community plazas caused drivers to take notice, honk and wave as more than 8,100 people participated in the first “Stop, Drop and Read” event. Schools, businesses and community members throughout Yamhill, Marion and Polk counties joined together on May 29 at 1:30 p.m. to take a 15-minute community-wide reading break.
"Stop, Drop and Read" was organized by Reading for All! to increase community awareness of the importance of strong reading skills. The public was encouraged to stop what they were doing, drop everything and read for up to 15 minutes.
The event was supported by public libraries, local fire and police departments. Reading for All! is a partnership between The Oregon Community Foundation and the Marion, Polk and Yamhill County Commissions on Children and Families
